Reflexology is a popular complementary treatment that uses finger pressure on the feet to re-balance the body and stimulate well-being. Like most complementary treatments, it is holistic and treats the person, rather than their condition. It's a natural, drug-free approach to relaxing the body and mind which helps to: release muscle tension; encourage the body systems to return to balance; and stimulate the client's own healing powers.
Reflexology can be particularly helpful in relieving stress related conditions such as: migraine, eczema, asthma, sinusitis, back pain, insomnia, PMS, infertility, IBS/ constipation and low energy levels.
Reflexology has been around for thousands of years and most ancient cultures - Chinese, Native American Indian, Indian, Hawaiian and Egyptian - all have a systemn of foot massage within their healing traditions.
In the UK, a reflexology treatment is likely to be relaxing, but beware treatments abroad: if you have a reflexology treatment in the Far East, it may do a great deal of good, but it's likely to be an excruciatingly painful experience.
Did you know?
- There are around 250,000 sweat glands in your feet that can excrete as much as half a pint of moisture every day.
- 25% of bones in the human body are located in the feet - 26 bones in each foot.
- There are 7,200 nerves in each foot - one of the reasons why reflexology is so relaxing is the sensory feedback from these nerve endings.
- Feet are strong enough to support up to 4 times the body's weight during high impact activities, yet sensitive enough to detect a grain of sand.
