7 ways to recover from the festive season

If your Festive Season has been full of excess, lucky you!  That's what it's all about - fun, food, friends and a drop of liquid refreshment.  However, instead of beginning the New Year with a rigid and extreme programme of dieting and exercise, try something that may be easier to stick to:

1. JUICE
Though you never want to go to extreme measures where your diet is concerned, there are some ideas that can work wonders. When it comes to naturally cleansing, try starting the day with a healthy detoxifying juice or smoothie.  Juice or blend: 1 apple, 1 carrot, 2 sticks of celery and 1in ginger root.  It's refreshing, delicious and will stimulate your body to naturally eliminate toxins.

2. DRINK MORE
Water, water, water... it helps to flush out your system naturally, and if you drink enough then this happens routinely. Proper water intake can contribute to clearer skin, properly functioning organs, and a more effective circulatory, respiratory, and digestive system.  OK, so when you begin to increase your water intake dramatically you may feel you spend all your time going to the loo.  But think of what happens when you water a dried out plant - the water runs straight through to begin with, but once the soil becomes hydrated, the water begins to be held by the soil and is then is absorbed and your plant is then magically restored to life.

3. GET MORE GRAINS
Fibre is part of a healthy diet that will contribute to weight loss, but it’s also an essential way of cleansing the body in its most natural form. Our bodies, particularly the digestive tract, tend to hold onto substances such as toxins, preservatives from foods, or waste that is not being properly disposed of by the body. Whatever the cause, the end result is that you may feel bloated, weighed down and unusually tired.  Fiber helps to keep the digestive tract working properly, moving waste through rapidly.   Natural sources of fibre are fresh fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, and all whole grains.  Start introducing fibre into your diet slowly to allow your body to adjust, but as you increase the amount of fibre in your diet, just watch how much better you feel.

4. TURN TO PROBIOTICS
Probiotics are a natural and good bacteria that help to regulate and balance bacteria in the digestive system. They also an help to eliminate the harmful bacteria. Probiotics can be found in yogurt and yogurt type drinks or in supplement form.  Good digestion will help your body do it's natural detox function much more efficiently and when digestion works well, you'll feel much better.

5. SWEAT
At this time of year, exercise is probably the last thing on your mind, but getting back to the gym/bike/hills/yoga mat or whatever you do for exercise, will help to cleanse the body of toxins.  When you exercise, not only are you helping your body to shed excess weight and build muscle, but you are also helping to release toxins that build up in the body. Not only that, but you are also helping with digestion, circulation, and to keep the organs functioning as they should with a challenging fitness regimen. The perspiration, the breathing, and the movement all help the body to achieve fitness and also to get rid of the bad and potentially harmful substances that have built up over time.  And if you hate exercise then there's always the Sauna.  Just remember that the more you sweat, the more water you need to drink to restore the balance!

6. CLEAN UNDER THE SINK
The chances are that the cupboard under the sink, where you store your cleaning materials, is full of toxins.  Have a good look and start thinking about how you can use natural ingredients for cleaning - baking power, vinegar, lemon, it's amazing how effective they can be.  Do a search on google or pinterest for some great ideas on how to reduce the toxin level in your house and save the planet at the same time.

7. REFLEXOLOGY
Now I'm biased of course, but I'm convinced that Reflexology provides a mild detox.  Over the past 18 years I've seen too many people rush to the loo at the end of a treatment to discount the diuretic effect that Reflexology can have.  And in January it's not unusual for me to see some clients show sensitivity in kidney and liver reflexes that isn't there the rest of the year.  It's not too much of a stretch to imagine that it might be due to increased alcohol, lower water intake and higher fat and salt consumption (from all those nibbles).  The purpose of Reflexology is to balance the body, and what better time for a treatment that the New Year.

However you begin 2017, be kind to yourself.
